Toyota has played a key role in the journey of Joby Aviation’s Pilot Production line.  Joby Aviation, Inc. is developing an all-electric aircraft with the intent for commercial passenger service. The company announced on June 28th that it had received a Special Airworthiness Certificate for the first aircraft built on its Marina, California location Pilot Production Line.  This certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration is very exciting, as it allows Job to begin flight tests with its first production prototype.

Toyota played a key role in the design and production as well as assembly of the Job aircraft. Having signed a long-term contract agreement for the supply of powertrain and actuation components, this makes Toyota Joby’s largest external shareholder with an investment of $400 million.  It is the beginning of a thrilling partnership between Toyota and Joby.

Tetsuo “Ted” Ogawa, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America, was on hand along with more than 1,000 esteemed guests and team members at the Marina facility to celebrate the production launch.

Ogawa, who has joined Joby’s Board of Directors as of July 1, 2023, said: “We congratulate Joby on reaching this milestone and look forward to working ever more closely as Joby prepares to scale production and start operations.”
