If you’ve ever wondered what’s in a name, you’ve come to the right place to learn about the Toyota TRD trim. TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development. While that may lead you to think Toyota cars that have those three letters in their name are intended for the racetrack, that’s not necessarily the case. Depending on the specific model you’re looking at, TRD may indicate improved off-roading prowess too.

What do racing and off-roading have in common? They both require precise architecture and tuning for the car’s suspension. However, with the TRD trim, Toyota engineers take that customization one step farther.

In the past, the TRD badge was reserved for the Toyota brand’s trucks and select SUVs. For the 2020 model year, the carmaker has introduced TRD versions of the new Toyota RAV4, the Toyota Camry, and the Toyota Avalon, branching out into every section of the market.

The TRD trim in the 2020 Toyota RAV4 lineup boasts exclusive 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires. The SUV also has an off-road suspension kit and an ample number of readily visible TRD logos. As far as the 2020 Toyota Camry is concerned, the TRD badge means 19-inch black wheels, enhanced brakes, a specially tuned suspension, added bracing for the chassis, and improved aerodynamics.

The TRD trim in the 2020 Toyota Avalon lineup has red seatbelts and complementary stitching. A sport exhaust, a sport-tuned suspension, and aerodynamic elements painted black make the TRD trim stand out from its brethren even more.
