Summer Vacation season is in full swing, and we’re always looking for exceptional places to visit and interesting things to see. From foodie tours to underground ghost hunting to historic reenactments and more, we’re no stranger to unusual tourist destinations and new perspectives on our favorite cities. On today’s blog, we’re headed to the Queen City: Cincinnati! We’re exploring some unique sites and stops along the way that will be sure to shake things up and make some lasting memories.  Been there before? Well, never you fear, because we’re taking you on a tour of this exciting Midwest city like you’ve never seen before.  Get ready to experience Cincinnati from a whole new perspective with our creative travel guide! more The Lucky Cat Museum (or Mewseum) has reopened by appointment only, and you simply must add it to your itinerary! The Ohio Lucky Cat Museum is a unique collection of decorative feline figurines known as the Maneki-neko, a luck symbol in Japanese culture.  This little roadside museum has collected just about every iteration of this cat icon! From plushes to toys and hand-painted artist renditions, there are more than two thousand of these kitties on display behind glass for your enjoyment. The Swing-House will have you feeling like a kid again. Artist Mark DeJong has transformed a historic 1880s 3-story brick home into a unique immersive interactive exhibit and experimental  interior design art piece.  You can book an overnight stay for some rest, relaxation, and reflection through the Swing House Air BnB and experience it up close and personal. The American Sign Museum celebrates more than a century of unique American signage in its nearly 20,000 square feet of museum space. From antique electric signs to hand-painted and gold-leafed neons, and modern signage with plastic and LEDs.  There is also a permanent collection of more than 1,000 sign-related books and research material in the Sign Museum Library (by appointment only, and is free with admission!) The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Museum is dedicated to preserving and highlighting the history of the Underground Railroad, and to pay tribute to the efforts to abolish human slavery and protect freedom for all people. The facility offers 90-minute guided tours on the 1st saturday of every month, with a knowledgeable guide – this tour is highly recommended and suggestion notes you should book in advance to secure a spot!  You can also purchase a combo ticket in-person for a tandem visit at the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center. Shop the Findlay Market, Ohio’s oldest continuously operated public market! With a seasonal farmers market, dozens of vendors offering plants and flowers, pet goods, produce, meat, cheese and dairy, baked goods and artisan desserts, takeout options and restaurants, this is true shoppers delight! Many of the businesses here are also multi-generational, continuing on a long-standing tradition of family run local establishments. Get a taste of the city on a Cincinnati Ethnic Food and Culture Tour by Riverside Food Tours! Head into the Over-The-Rhine neighborhood with small group tours taking you on a tasting tour of the best local restaurants and learn a little about the area’s local history!  You’ll visit six different eateries, and learn about the cultures and neighborhoods they reside in from a knowledgeable local guide! Book a “Nightmare on Elm Street Walking Tour” and experience the city nightlife from a new perspective - the afterlife!  American Legacy Tours shares an in-depth history throug the Over-The-Rhine neighborhood section that begins and ends at Northern Row Brewery. You’ll take a tour under the city in the brewery’s tunnels, built in the 1800s, that make their way 30 feet underground!  Visitors and employees have noted eerie experiences and reported some ghostly encounters throughout the years.  The tour is about 2 hours long, is open to guests 6 and up, and also offers an opportunity to test some ghost-hunting equipment the professionals use! The Contemporary Arts Center has been a part of the community for more than 75 years!  The center has free daily admission, and is chock full of modern and contemporary artworks of all kinds. Current experiences and exhibitions include “Jayson Musson: His History of Art”; “Untitled” (L.A) by Felix Gonzalez-Torres; Kahlil Robert Irving: Ground Water from screen Falls Street; live performances and special event festivals; and numerous tours both guided, group, and audio/video options. Monet: The Immersive Experience is a multi-faceted immersive art exhibit featuring the work of artist Claude Monet as yo’ve never seen it before.  You’ll have the opportunity to walk into a painting, enjoy 360 degree digital projections, and enjoy an unforgettable virtual reality experience of the artist’s catalog. Late Summer season is one of the most fun times to go camping. The temperatures are a little less stifling during the day, and night time is much cooler and more comfortable. It’s the perfect time to enjoy a little R&R under the stars and do some campfire cooking and s’mores making.  On today’s blog, we’re going to share some great campsite locations in Illinois, along with some very important safety tips for communing with nature. more When you’re camping or hiking in the woods, you’ll want to be mindful and respectful of local wildlife!  So, in honor of World Snake Day, at the end of our post we’re also going to help you learn some of the common snakes in our area so you can stay safe on your outdoor adventures!  Be sure to check out these important safety tips on identifying snakes of the Midwest so you can rest assured your tent is safe and comfortable. About State Park Campsites in Illinois The Spring/Summer camping season in Illinois State Parks runs from May 1st through September 30th.  Fall/Winter camping season starts on October 1st and runs through April 30th.  You can reserve your campsite with the Illinois State Government t o ensure that you’ve got your campsite settled! Some sites may be listed as “walk-in” and are first-come, first-serve campsites upon arrival; it’s important to note that this may mean some sites are full upon your arrival. Three Great Options for State Park Camping in Illinois Shawnee National Forest With more than 280,000 acres of ground to explore including prairies, meadows, lakes, ponds, rivers, waterfalls and dozens of wooded trails, this park is prime time camping real estate!  Top attractions at this area include (but most certainly are not limited to) the stunning sandstone cliff seasonal waterfall, Jackson Falls; the Bell Smith Springs recreation area with canyons, streams, sandstone cliffs, and plentiful plants and wildlife; Pomona Natural Bridge hiking trail through a mature oak-hickory and beech forest; Kinkaid Lake which offers plentiful trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, as well as kayaking/canoeing; Garden of the Gods wilderness area with unique rock formations and gorgeous views of the forest from atop rocky cliff sides. Camping at Shawnee National Forest can be done at the Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area, Camp Cadiz Campground, Garden of the Gods Recreation Area, Lake Glendale REcreation Area, Pounds Hollow Recreation Area, Tower Rock Campground, Johnson Creek Recreation Area, Kinkaid Lake and Trail System, and the Pine Hills Campground. Starved Rock State Park This 2,630 acre wilderness area is situated right on the Illinois River and is famous for its glacial formed sandstone canyons.  The park has waterfalls a plenty, with their primetime season being March through May, but they’re still just as beautiful in any season!  To catch the waterfalls you’ll want to follow the Green Interior Canyon Trails map and stop by French Canyon, Wildcat Canyon, Ottawa Canyon, LaSalle Canyon, Kaskaskia Canyon, Aurora Canyon, and St. Louis.  You can tour the park on your own from sunrise to sunset along any of the marked hiking trails, or opt for a guided hike with a professional trail guide through the bluffs, canyons, waterfalls, and learn a little about the history of the park along the way.  Be sure to bookmark the Starved Rock State Park Checklist of wildlife so you can look for the vast and diverse species of creatures that call this beautiful area home, and learn more about the hundreds of species of plants and flowers that create such a lush, sprawling landscape. Camping reservations can be made at the Starved Rock State Park CampGround which offers pit toilets and seasonal porta potties, shower houses, a dump station and garbage drop, camp store, water hookups, and a playground.  Pets are welcome but must remain on a leash and with their handler at all times; pet waste must be picked up and disposed of in designated areas. Apple River Canyon State Park This state park may not be as large as the previous suggestions with just 1,907 acres, but smaller acreage doesn’t imply it’s short on fun by any means!  Located on the northwest corner of Illinois near the Wisconsin border, this park boasts impressive Limestone bluffs, deep ravines, sparkling springs, beautiful streams, and abundant wildlife!  The region was once part of a very large sea bottom that spanned from the Allegheny Mountains to the Rocky Mountains, and the area’s canyons were formed by the waters of the Apple River over many, many years. There’s lots of space to enjoy your favorite outdoor activities from hiking to hunting to fishing, plus beautiful open meadows and picnic areas to do some picnicking! Camping reservations can be made at the Canyon Ridge Campground, but they don’t have any showers on site.  There are also 6 group sites in the Walnut Grove Youth Campground, which is also used for Winter camping from 11/1-4/15. When you’re planning a camping road trip, one of the first things you think about is a change in scenery!  You’ll seek a place that’s picturesque, offers a chance to experience novel environments, affords a glimpse at the most pristine scenes in nature, is located in an area with plenty of interesting things to do, puts you up close and personal with a unique selection of plants and wildlife to observe. more Each of the places on today’s list fulfills that goal, and then some!  We’re bringing you selections of some of the most beautiful places to go camping across the US. From Dark Sky designated parks to mountainscapes and glistening lakes, we bet our britches that you’ll find heaven on earth at each one! Today we’re bringing you three of the most scenic and unique places to camp in the US, along with several other recommendations for further exploration. As an added bonus, each of these three places offers dog-friendly and pet-friendly options so you don’t have to leave your furry friend behind with a sitter. Pawtuckaway State Park in New Hampshire As one of the largest state parks in southeastern NH, this 5,000 acre preserve is a hot spot for camping and outdoor recreation. The lake has pristine, crystal clear blue water that’s perfect for swimming and boating.  There are 32 miles of hiking trails to level up your trekking skills, including the dual 900-foot summits of both North and South Pawtuckaway mountains. Reserve a campsite out of the 192 sites available nestled deep in the fresh pine woodlands and plenty of which offer incredible views of Pawtuckaway Lake.  Amenities include 24-hr bathhouses, a camp store, and on-site canoe and kayak rentals.  Each campsite here has their own open fire ring, picnic table area, tent-friendly flat ground, and parking. To make the most of your stay and take advantage of the beauty here, visitors recommend checking out the following trails for amazing views: South Mountain Lookout Tower Trail (5mi), North Mountain and South Mountain Trails (6.1mi), North Mountain and Boulder Trail Loop (9.5mi). If you’re kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding, visitors recommend heading over to the southern area of the lake in the late afternoon to dusk to enjoy a beautiful sunset over the calm lake. The area is incredibly diverse with wildlife and plants, and you may even luck out and spot an elusive Loon on the lake or a Moose traipsing through the trees. For fishing, this is the place to be with plenty of coves, rocky shorelines and calm waters to catch some impressive specimens! Remember to secure a local fishing license at a nearby store or business before fishing. If you’re looking to bring pets in tow, please note that they’re only allowed at the campgrounds and beach areas from September 30th through May 1st; pets are prohibited during summer season. You and your furry pals will be able to explore the hiking trails through Reservation Road and Round Pond Road Only, and pets must be on leashes no longer than 6 feet and you must clean up their waste. Acadia National Park in Maine This 47,000 acre national park boasts a stunning rocky coastline with gorgeous waves crashing below, quintessential New England lighthouses, it has remarkably dark skies affording unmatched views of The Milky Way and constellations. It’s also home to a protected area of nesting peregrine falcons, so keep your eyes peeled to spot them as they hunt and fly! The park offers two designated camping areas that you’ll need to reserve up to 2 months in advance in the Mount Desert Island area or Schoodic Peninsula, as well as 5 lean-to shelters on Isle au Haut.  You can choose from the Blackwoods Campground is on the east side of Mount Desert Island and Seawall Campground is on the west side.  Schoodic Woods Campground is on the mainland. Duck Harbor Campground is on Isle Au Haut and requires a mailboat to access. There is also the Wildwood Stables Campground for those with stock animals in tow!  There is no backcountry camping permitted and no lodging available. To make the most of the park, visitors recommend the following hikes (please note that some may be more challenging than others, so plan for your skill level): Precipice Trail (2.5mi), Ocean Path Trail (4mi roundtrip), South Bubble Trail (1 to 4mi),  Jordan Cliffs and Jordan Pond Path (3.5 mi). For kayaking and canoeing, you’ll want to check out the inland lakes and ponds such as Bubble Pond, Jordan Pond, Seal Cove Pond, Echo Lake, Eagle Lake, and take a trip for some sea kayaking around the Cranberry Isles off the southern coast of Mount Desert Island! Unlike many other national parks, this one is quite pet friendly, and your buddy can even become an official Bark Ranger!  There are 100 miles of dog-friendly trails and 45 miles of dog-friendly carriage roads in Acadia, but your pup will need to be leashed on a line no longer than 6-ft, must not be left unattended at any time, and you must clean up after their waste. Pets are also welcomed at Blackwoods, Seawall, and Schoodic campgrounds! Lake Bistineau State Park in Louisiana While it’s one of the smaller entries on the list, this state park certainly is not short on excitement and adventure!  This unique park is renowned for its natural beauty featuring a mixed hardwood forest, magical cypress and tupelo trees, scenic trails through the southern wilderness, and a gorgeous open water reservoir to explore. The park offers a large lodge area, cabins for rent, and reservable campsites. Many of the campsites offer water and electric hookups, as well as there are restrooms, showers, and a dumping station on the park grounds.  Pets can join you on the campgrounds and some designated trails, and must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Please note they are not allowed in any of the cabins; pets must be leashed or kenneled outside the facilities. There are five different hiking trails to try with varying surfaces and difficulty levels: Willis Homestead Trail (3.8mi), Blue Wing Trail (1.2mi), Koasati Trail (2mi), Pintail Loop Trail (1.3mi), Discovery Circle (0.4mi), and a delightful 6-mile Equestrian trail if you’ve brought your own horse along!  The park is a hotspot for birding enthusiasts and if you’re observant you might be blessed to spot a Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, White Ibis, many varieties of song bird and woodpecker and owl, and perhaps even a Roseate Spoonbill!  It’s the perfect place to enjoy some kayaking and canoeing along the 11-mile canoe trail.  You can even try your hand at something new with the 18-hole disc golf course on site. This past week we all celebrated the illustrious Shark Week, and we thought it would be a great close out to extend it by just one more fintastic day!  Today on the blog, we’re sharing some great options for amazing aquariums all across the US. Looking for some inspiration on where to start planning your next road trip? They make a great family vacation stop and are sure to please visitors of all ages in your party, plus it’s a great educational experience disguised as play and fun!  Check out one of these incredible aquariums and make that your jumping off point to explore the city around it for some serious memory-making fun. more Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois We’re going to start our journey right here in our own backyard at the Shedd Aquarium!  This incredible modern aquarium boasts 32,600 species of aquatic life.  Its permanent exhibits include a 90,000 gallon Caribbean Reef aquarium display; the Amazon Rising display featuring wildlife from the rainforest and river, the underground Wild Reef wing featuring the largest public display of live corals in the Midwest; the Abbott Oceanarium featuring Pacific Northwest aquatics, an indoor rainforest, and coastal display as well as penguins;  Waters of the World featuring 7 different habitats from around the globe! There’s also a 4D movie, live demonstrations and shows, and a play zone for younger visitors. The aquarium also offers weekly and seasonal special events, so you should check their upcoming calendar to see what’s in store.  If you’ve got curious travelers in tow, then the numerous Animal Encounters options will appeal such as the Penguin Encounter, Shark Feeding Tour, and the unique guided “Must See Tour”. New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts This beautiful facility boasts the largest shark and ray touch tank on the East Coast, but that’s not all they have to offer. The New England Aquarium has several impressive exhibits that you won’t want to miss, such as the Amazon Rainforest exhibit, the four-story Giant Ocean Tank, the stunning Indo-Pacific Coral Reef, a bit of regional science at the Gulf of Maine exhibit, the Olympic Coast exhibit, the Yawkey Coral Reef Center and more.  The NE Aquarium also specializes in rehabilitating and reintroducing wildlife through their Sea Turtle Hospital at Quincy Animal Care Center and special programs through Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life which also focuses on protecting North American Right Whales, handling day-to-day animal husbandry, special Shark Research projects on Nantucket, and a plethora of other fascinating projects. Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut This small but mighty aquarium boasts 300 species of marine mammals, fish, birds, invertebrates, and even reptiles. It makes a perfect stop in your travels around Mystic Seaport, and will delight everyone in your party with how many hands-on and interactive displays and exhibits there are to enjoy.  The unique Dino Seas: Immersive Journey Exhibit explores the ancient seas on earth way back when giant reptiles, mammals, and incredible underwater creatures dwelled; the Undersea Explorer VR Exhibit puts you up close and personal with the ocean like you’ve never experienced before through a mesmerizing virtual presentation; take a walk through the Marsh Trek and tread a 234-foot boardwalk through a living marsh environment while you spot the local wildlife hidden amidst the plants and flowers; head into the main gallery to check out the large central 35,000 gallon exhibit teeming with aquatic life from eels to tangs to sea slugs and puffers and yes, even sharks! Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey Located along the harbor facing the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, this urban city is home to one of the most magnificent aquariums.  The Camden Aquarium boasts a 40-foot walk through Shark Tunnel, the longest in the state, and the Shark Bridge which allows you an aerial view walking mere inches above various species of sharks, which you can then follow up with the Touch-A-Shark experience and a visit to the 550,000 gallon Shark Realm aquarium featuring more than 200 animals and multiple species of shark!  For those looking for a less intimidating creature to observe, the 760,000 Sea Turtle Cove Exhibit or Penguin Park and Hippo HAven may be more your style.  If you’re looking for a multi-sensory immersion, we highly recommend checking out the Piranha Falls and Amazon Rainforest portion that enhance the exhibit with sights and sounds from the rainforest for a more realistic experience. Little ones will love the Pirate’s Passage, KidZone, The Grotto touch tanks, the brand new Imagination Sand Station augmented reality exhibit, and an immersive 3D theater! Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Tennessee This busy riverfront aquarium offers a wonderful dual-ticket option combining your aquarium visit with an enhanced IMAX movie viewing.  The museum is very excited to announce they’ve recently started the new “Deeper Dives” in-depth tour experience, allowing small groups of visitors to choose between two different options for a behind the scenes look at the magic that it takes to run the aquarium; select the 90 minute Guided  Tour of the Ocean Journey and River Journey buildings and meet an animal ambassador; or select the Feeding Frenzy and follow an Aquarium Educator and Aquarist around the Secret Reef exhibit for feeding time, and during your 30 minutes you’ll get to experience rays, sea turtles, reef fish, and of course sharks!  Exhibits on site include the River Journey featuring global river aquatics and reptiles, the Ocean Journey featuring penguins, a shark reef, tropical cove area, and a butterfly garden, as well as an invertebrate species display and island life display. The aquarium also offers the TNACI which helps conduct scientific research and conservation efforts to regional ecosystems and educates the public on the importance of conservation actions. National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland Being dubbed the National Aquarium of the US is no small feat, and this massive compound features dozens of exhibits over multiple floors of some of the most outstanding aquatic and marine habitats you’ll ever see. Level 1 contains the Blacktip Reef exhibit; Level 2 features the regional Maryland: Mountains to the Sea exhibit; Level 3 features the Surviving through Adaptation and Living Seashore exhibits; Level 4 encompasses the Sea Cliffs, Kelp Forest, Pacific Coral Reef, Amazon River Forest exhibits; Level 5 features the Upland Tropical Rain Forest and Hidden Life exhibits.  There are also three different tour experiences to choose from, the 1-hr Family Sunrise Tour that runs each day before the facility opens to the public where families will help feed breakfast to the animals, get an up-close look at the touch pools, and the inside scoop about the many animals that reside here. On weekends, you can catch the 2 hour Insider’s Tour for visitors 8 and up, where you’ll get to check out an archerfish feeding in “Australia: Wild Extremes” feed breakfast to the Atlantic Coral Reef fish, get up close with the touch pools, and tour some exclusive behind-the-scenes spaces in the aquarium. Last but not least is the new VR Experience, allowing visitors to experience a short immersive exhibit where they become “submerged” in Artificial environments narrated by explorers, scientists, and conservationists for 360-degree viewing of underwater environments.  The aquarium also offers a multitude of special events and discounted days, as well as offering “First Saturdays and Sundays” for accessible visitation 30 minutes before opening on the weekend for a sensory-friendly, crowd-free experience for all disabled visitors. If sand and sun are not your style, we’ve got four perfect vacation spots that will take you to emerald green forests, tree-lined shores, crystal clear lakes and rivers, rocky cliffs, and even snow-capped peaks.  Today, we’re sharing four incredible hiking spots in the US that you absolutely must hike.  We’ve given you some options for beginner hikes to get you started, and intermediate/expert options to test your limits and show your grit. Pro Tip: These destinations also make incredible road trip starting points and we encourage you to center your trips on exploring the area and the towns of each region before and after your trek! You’ll find wonderful food, art and photography, and plenty of local history, plus lots of spas to rest and recharge before your next adventure. more Four Must-Try Hiking Spots in the US: Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina This sprawling national forest has more than a half-million acres of protected land in the Appalachian Mountains filled with white water rivers, stunning waterfalls, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails to enjoy. Visitors who are looking for a challenge can try their hand at trails like Black Balsam and Tennent Mountain Loop, nearly 12 miles of hiking off the Blue Ridge Parkway; the Mountains-to-Sea Trail through dense forests with plenty of challenging creek-crossings; Deep Gap Loop which encompasses 7 different trails together that wind through Sassafras Knob and Pilot Mountain.  If you’re just starting out on your hiking enthusiast journey, you may be more suited to check out trails like Looking Glass Falls for ¼ mile hike with stairs that leads to a beautiful fall; Sliding Rock is about ⅓ of a mile long, and leads to one of the more popular swimming hole areas in Pisgah during the summer months; Moore Cove Falls Trail which is a 1.2 mile trail round trip loop through the woods and nearby to Looking Glass falls. Tahoe Rim Trail in Lake Tahoe (California/Nevada) This crystal clear freshwater lake is situated in between the Sierra Nevada Mountains along the border of both California and Nevada, and the largest alpine lake in all of North America.  IBeginners can still take in plenty of the area with beautiful a beautiful boardwalk hike through the meadows at Ophir Creek Loop Hike that has options from 1.5-4.5 miles; explore the stunning waterfalls of Van Sickle Bi-State Park Waterfall Hike trail that’s just 2.5 miles round trip; baby step your way to mountain peak hiking with the 3 mile round trip Picnic Rock Vista Hike affording you 360 degree views of Lake Tahoe Basin.  Experienced hiking enthusiasts will meet their match with the 12 mile round trip Snow Valley Peak Hike, rewarding you with panoramic views of Lake Tahoe; Relay Peak Hike is a great second option for 10 miles round trip and access to the highest point on the Tahoe Rim Trail; Lake Aloha Hike trail is 12 miles round trip through pristine wilderness and plenty of uphill climbing. Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona This natural red rock canyon was carved out by the Colorado River millions of years ago, and contains sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks.  This national park area is immense, and deserves more than one visit if you can manage it.  Easier hikes in this area include Bright Angel Point Trail which is just half a mile on a short paved trail; Transept Trail which is 3 miles round trip and follows along the canyon rim, Bridle Trail is 3 miles long round trip and is also pet-friendly; Cape Royal Trail is a flat paved trail with some impressive views and just .6 miles long; Cliff Springs Trail features a chest-high boulder and natural springs (do not drink the water!) Day long and more challenging hikes include the Bright Angel Trail that ranges up to 12 mile sling round trip; South Kaibab Trail which offers steep trails with no water and very little shade and distances of up to 6 miles round trip; Grandview Trail presents a significant challenge with very steep  climbs and tough conditions as it’s an unmaintained trail offering up to 8 or 9 miles total if you do both of the offered hikes. Rocky Mountains National Park in Colorado The rockies are a quintessential US hiking spot, with snow capped peaks, stunning rock outcroppings, majestic pine trees sprawling across hilltops, and some of the most crystal clear water you’ve ever seen.  Visitors here recommend beginner enthusiasts check out the Alberta Falls Trail for some family-friendly hikes that take you along the Glacier Gorge Junction trailhead to the Alberta Falls in just 1.6 miles round trip; Bear Lake Loop is .7 miles long and takes you to the mirror-perfect high-altitude Bear Lake, affording you unparalleled views of the snow-capped peaks; take the Fern Lake Trail 3.3 miles out to The Pool as well as Fern Lake and Fern Falls just past it.  For those looking to really test their limits, HAllett Peak will give you quite the workout along its 10.3 miles including high elevation and steep trails that reach a height of 12,713 feet but lead to incredible vistas; Chasm Lake is rated as one of the best hikes in the area with 8.5 miles and 2,500 feet in elevation gains; The Keyhole on Longs Peak is for the most experienced hikers in our midst and those in very good physical condition as it is 12.4 miles of trails that reach more than 4,000 feet in elevation, but if your lungs can handle it, you’ll be rewarded with absolutely breathtaking views; Mount Ida via the Poudre Lake Trailhead will push you to the limits with its extremely rugged terrain, harsh weather conditions, and 2,465 miles in elevation gain along its 9.6 miles, and be ready for anything as weather is unpredictable in this region.

You’ll want to pack an umbrella and beach chairs or a sun shelter for a little respite from the summer skies, but it’s a great family friendly beach with far less foot traffic than Hampton Beach. Fishermen in the area recommend night time and early dawn to do some surf fishing during high tide. Sachuest Beach in Rhode Island During the summer this is one of the area’s most popular beaches with well-groomed sand and clear waters.  Although Summer is bustling, there’s ample room to enjoy the beach with your family without overwhelming crowds cramping your space. The water is calm, sparkling clean, and perfect for swimming, and in the off-season it’s prime real estate for surfing.  You’ll find plenty of souvenirs like rocks, sea glass, and seashells to take home as mementos!  Local birders love this spot, citing the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge at the eastern end of the beach as a great place to do some year-round birdwatching! Plus, there’s lots of opportunity for anglers to enjoy prime fishing, including a special permit for night fishing the local striped bass. Long Beach Island in New Jersey Affectionately known by locals as LBI, this favorite New Jersey white sand beach spot is known for the charming Barnegat Light area with its scenic lighthouse and beachside state park.  There’s miles of shoreline to enjoy with natural sand dunes and seabirds, plenty of boating and fishing, and plentiful swimming opportunities.  Families love visiting the Fantasy Island area for traditional carnival rides, arcade games, and boardwalk entertainment.  There’s also a charming downtown area with ample shopping and stores, as well as delicious eateries. Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland This barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia is known for its wild horses and ponies. But that’s not all it has to offer! The beaches here are far less crowded than the nearby Ocean City, and there are numerous nature trails and boardwalks to enjoy as well.  As far as the eye can see you’ll find blue skies and beautiful white sand, and if you look hard enough along the shoreline you’ll find beautiful seashells to collect, too.  You’ll want to make sure you have your camera ready when you’re here, as it’s not unusual to see a group of wild horses and even a scampering young foal trot along the beach, boardwalks, and marshes! Folly Beach in South Carolina Just south of Charleston is the beautiful Folly Beach area, prime real estate for wildlife such as pelicans, Wilson’s plover, loggerhead sea turtles, and more.  It’s also famous for its incredible boardwalk and the East Coast’s second-largest fishing pier, stretching 1,000 feet into the ocean.  The beach is not only great for swimming and surfing, but there are other adventures to enjoy such as Kayaking and Paddleboarding , the Folly Boat eco-tours, the South Carolina Aquarium, and the Caw Caw Interpretive Center.  The surrounding area also offers incredible educational entertainment such as science, history and kid-friendly museums, as well as immense options for shopping and live entertainment. Amelia Island in Florida The southernmost entry in the Sea Island chain of barrier islands is located off the Northeast coast of Florida.  With 13 miles of pristine open beaches to the east, and stunning salt-marsh estuaries teeming with wildlife and seabirds to the west, this is a lush paradise of beachside heaven.  You don’t need a car when you visit, as modes of transportation include bikes, horses, golf carts, and Segways instead, and of course, walking is a great option, too.  You’ll love spending time at the beach here for swimming, surfing, and picnicking with your loved ones and friends.  Locals love surfing near Amelia Pier and Fernandina Beach Pier due to the huge waves swells and warmer water temperatures. Kohler-Andrae State Park in Wisconsin The stunning golden sand beaches of Kohler-Andrae State Park are just one of the many features of this natural preserve on the shores of Lake Michigan. You’ll find sparkling, shimmering lake water to swim and fish, as well as beautiful boardwalk trails to tread on your way to some majestic nature hiking and wildlife spotting. Locals love traversing the beach trail through the dunes year round, which is a beautiful 2-mile hike along the shores of the Lake. Small watercraft are permitted, but it’s worth noting that there isn’t a boat launch here.  As an added bonus, though, there is a pet-friendly picnic and swimming area here at the park!  There is also plenty of room for sunbathing and relaxing in the summer air if you’re not keen on swimming or hiking. North Beach in Racine Wisconsin This gorgeous area offers ample space, with more than 50 acres of sandy beach along the 2,500 feet of shoreline along Lake Michigan.  It’s perfect for families, providing you plenty of space to play, lounge in the sun, and of course, go swimming!  The “Kids Cove” playground is perfect for families to enjoy a little extra energetic playtime, as well as sand volleyball courts for some friendly competition. Cannon Beach in Oregon This incredible beach offers misty tree lined cliffs that border the beautiful sandy shoreline with jetties and beautiful rock formations to explore.  Take a trek around through the local trails and you’ll notice plenty of coastal wildlife from sea stars to elk to puffins!  While you’re in the area, you certainly want to take advantage of the local whale watching tours, with nearly 18,000 gray whales calling the area home during their bi-annual migrations (Mid-March to Mid-April, and Mid-December to Mid-January).  The downtown area is also an art enthusiast’s dream destination, filled with 15 outstanding art galleries to visit and shop.

Wander through the whimsical and brilliant George Boedecker Sculpture Garden. These marvelous sculptures are scattered throughout the property, nestled in the Bellevue neighborhood.  The sculptures are part of a curated collection by a Mexican artist that George Boedecker, founder of Crocs footwear, met on a business trip. Thus far you’ll find larger than life statues of a tiger, lion, and bear (oh my!) as well as several dinosaurs.  Boedecker plans to expand the project further, including 5 new velociraptors!  His hope is to bring joy to the community as well as leaving a lasting legacy to his family and grandchildren, so the grounds can be enjoyed for decades to come.  Bodecker’s non-profit organization also helped fund the local Riverside Revival arts and events space in Nashville, which is worthy of another stop while you’re in the area.

Take some time to visit Kickapoo River Valley Reserve and Driftless Region This 8500+ acre reserve is nestled between LaFarge and Ontario in southwestern Wisconsin. It’s a true paradise of picturesque scenery, sprawling hardwood forests, abundant local plants and animals, and peaceful water and shoreline featuring immense stone formations and rocky cliffs, a trademark of the Driftless Region.  The Kickapoo River offers 125 miles of water to enjoy row boating, canoeing, and kayaking, and plenty of chances to fish.  There are numerous options for hiking by foot, on horseback, or by mountain bike/trail bike.  Locals recommend a hike along the West Ridge Trail through Hanson Hollow to check out the views from Hanson Rock!  Hay Valley Woods provide beautiful respite from busy cities and suburbs, and offer a gorgeous look at the local hardwoods and lots of opportunity for wildlife watching! Book a rustic local log cabin for a taste of the outdoors, or get reconnected with nature with the campsite options in the area. Bavarian Blast Festival in New Ulm, Minnesota Held annually each summer in New Ulm, this unique festival prides itself on being the biggest party of the summer for the local area. It’s a 4-day event that has grown in popularity, and outgrew its original roots at local German Park, now held at the Brown County Fairgrounds.  It's energetic and enthusiastic in celebrating the region’s German heritage.  For its 17th year running, the festival promises plenty of live music and dance, family-friendly activities, a sauerkraut-eating contest, beer-stein holding contest, barrel rolling, dog racing, and plenty of polka! Each day is a full schedule of bands, singers, and entertainers in Schell’s Tent. Or enjoy the dancing and demonstrations at KNVJ Polka Hall. Closing out the event is the unforgettable Bavarian Blast Parade! This year’s event is held July 18th through July 21st 2024. Little Italy Festival in Clinton, Indiana A full jam-packed festival over Labor Day Weekend, this festival celebrates the local Italian heritage of Clinton with great gusto starting with a parade.  You’ll find delicious Italian and Italian-American cuisine from local restaurants and food trucks and handmade gelatos. The festival offers ample opportunity to connect with the local community and city, explore its connections to Italian immigrants and culture, and educate yourself on Italian traditions. There’s plenty of family friendly activities such as face painting, carnival rides and games, and lots of shopping with local and artisan vendors.  Treat your ears to some of the live entertainment  such as the bands playing traditional Italian favorites, learn some traditional Italian dances, and even try your hand at the local grape stomping competition.  This year’s event runs August 30th through September 2nd 2024 Dublin Irish Festival in Dublin, Ohio Attracting more than 100,000 attendees each year, this annual celebration showcases the lively music and culture of Ireland!  With 37 years running, this is the largest 3-day Irish festival in the world.  There are 7 stages of live music and entertainment with more than 60 acts and 800 performers to keep you entertained.  Bring the whole family out for a weekend of fun and excitement! Try your luck in the 5K & Kids Dash to kick off the festival, followed by a celebratory Post-Race Party and Concert.  Get to know the dogs of Ireland up close and personal at the Celtic Canines area, and learn about the history of Irish dog breeds.  Enjoy hands-on workshops, activities, cultural demonstrations, and historical reenactments at the Music and Cultural Workshop stages, or try your hand at a round of darts.  Want to learn more about your own Irish heritage? This year’s festival takes place from August 2nd through August 4th 2024. The Diwali Festival of San Antonio, Texas This unique festival experience celebrates the traditional Indian holiday of Diwali, the festival of lights.  Diwali is traditionally celebrated over the course of 5 days with festive feasts, gatherings with family and loved ones, fireworks displays, rangoli  artworks with oil lamps, and more.  The San Antonio festival started in 2009 as a celebration of the “Sister-City” relationship between Chennai, India and San Antonio, Texas. It has since blossomed into a major celebration for the city! Celebrations include ceremonial floating candle lighting along the River Walk, traditional Indian dance celebrations, delectable Indian cuisine from local restaurants and food trucks, art and merchant booths, vendors selling traditional Indian attire, and so much more. And of course, at the end of the night there’s a truly impressive fireworks spectacular!  The San Antonio event is a single-night event happening each November, this year taking place on November 2nd 2024. National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City, New York Celebrating the rich Puerto Rican cultural history of local immigrant populations and the country itself, this day is an explosion of excitement and entertainment while raising awareness about the community’s contributions to the world.  The parade starts at 11AM and runs from 44th street to 5th Avenue to 79th Street.  Each year features a new theme, with the most recent being “Boricua de Corazon” or “Puerto Rican in Your Heart”.  It features fantastic floats, explosive entertainment and musical acts, dazzling folkloric dance demonstrations, incredible costumes and traditional dress, and of course plenty of family-friendly activities, food, and shopping at the 152nd Street Cultural Festival in the Bronx.  The next event will take place on June 8th 2025. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico For nine incredible days, Balloon Fiesta Park becomes a true spectacle to behold as 600 balloons fill the grounds and the sky for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. What started as a small gathering of 13 balloonists has grown into both the largest ballooning event and the most photographed event in the world!  In 2022, the festival celebrated its 50th anniversary and 50th event and record breaking turnout.  Plan to spend at least 3 days here at minimum, so you have better odds of witnessing the incredible balloon launches early in the morning.  There’s so much to experience and see here that might even be a little overwhelming. You’ll experience everything from gas balloon races, to flying competitions, to uniquely shaped balloons, drone light shows, live music in Balloon FEstival Park, chainsaw carving competitions, car shows, carnival games and rides, and so very much more.  This year’s event starts October 5th and runs through October 13th 2024.

This geological boundary separates the watersheds of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic Oceans, and runs 3,100 miles between Mexico and Canada, and through 5 US States including Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico.  Book a private tour from one of the many experienced equestrian guides and ranches in the area, and explore Montana’s backcountry, enjoy some rustic camping, outdoor cooking, and unmatched views of mountain peaks, lush green meadows, and pristine forests. From July 6th and 7th starting from 10AM to 5PM in Lincolnshire, come on down for the 27th Annual Lincolnshire Arts Festival at the Village Green at 100 Village Green Drive. Friday July 5th through Sunday July 7th from 1PM to 6PM at Cook Park in Libertyville, the annual Dog Days of Summer event is on!  Starting at 11AM on July 5th. Featuring the Dockdogs National Canine Aquatic Competition and Big Air Finals!  Admission is free. First Friday of Libertyville is happening in Downtown Libertyville with special shop discounts, live events and entertainments, dining discounts and limited special meals/cocktails, and wine tastings. Parking and admission is free. Beachfest is back at Round Lake Beach on July 6th from 3PM to 11PM at the Cultural Civic Center of Round Lake Beach. Live music and bands, live demonstrations, a magic show, food trucks/vendors, and more will be starting at 3PM and running through dusk.  Fireworks display to follow the entertainment at dusk. BYO Chairs and Blankets, free admission to this family-friendly event. Stories in the Woods at the Heller Nature Center will be happening from 10AM to 11PM in Highland Park. All participants must register in advance for the event, and the program will be conducted outdoors; dress accordingly and remember sunblock!  Children must be accompanied by a paying adult. Songs in the Sand at Rosewood Beach runs from 6:30PM to 7:45PM at the Rosewood Beach & Interpretive Center in Highland Park.  Preregistration is required; children must be accompanied by paying adult, but children under 2 are free admission.  Program is outdoors. Free Movies in the Park hosted by Waukgean will be showing Wonka at Bowen Park on Saturday, July 13th.  Movies begin at sunset and attendees are encouraged to BYO blanket and chair and snacks or picnic meal to enjoy the movie outdoors. Movies do have rain date postponements if needed. July 13th is Paint Your Pet Night at the Parched Pug of Libertyville starting at 1PM.  Register in advance to hold your spot for this popular event. The Lindenhurst Artisan Market is coming to town at the Lindenhurst Center on July 14th from 10AM to 3PM. Leashed, well-behaved pets are welcomed!  Event will include live music, kid friendly activities and entertainment, food trucks and food vendors, handmade artisan goods and fine crafts, and local vendor products and small business demos. Vernon Hill Days will be happening over 4 days from July 18th through the 21st. Four fun-filled days of family-friendly activities, games, rides, live music and entertainment, plenty of food and drink and other exciting events will be held! ArtWauk Waugekan is back for July 20th from 5PM to 9PM with live arts and entertainment and restaurant/business specials around town. AlpineFest is back again this year from July 19th through the 21st hosted by the LAke Zurich Lions Club. Although the Sunday parade is canceled for this year, there will be plenty left to do! The 12th Annual Lambs Farm Car Show will take place on July 21st from 10AM through 3PM at Lambs Farm in Libertyville!  This annual event is beloved by locals and features all sorts of makes, models, and years of vehicles.
