Live Out Your Twilight Fan Dreams with the Ultimate Twilight Road Trip Guide Forks, Washington - Located about 4 hours outside of Seattle, this tiny little town has truly embraced its pop culture fame. Stop by the Forks Visitor Center to grab your free “Twilight Packet” to help guide you with a map to all the important places; places from the Books mentioned include the Swan House, Cullen House, Forks High School (Kalama High School), City of Forks Welcome Sign, Forks Police Station, Bella’s Truck from the movie. While in town you absolutely must swing by the “Forever Twilight Collection” located at the Chamber of Commerce with actual props and costumes from the movie as well as photo-ops and fan-made memorabilia.  The Native to Twilight store offers a nice variety of Twilight merch at affordable prices along with local art made by regional Native Americans and a selection of local souvenirs.  Grab a Bite to Eat at Sully’s Burgers or Pacific Pizza, both of which offer unique Twilight themed entries on their menu.  You can even book a room at the new Swan House AirBnB or Jacob Black’s House AirBnB.  Stop by the “Treaty Line” on La Push Rd and choose a side: wolves or vampires (right down the road from Jacob’s House). Park your car at the Forks Community Hospital and check out the Dr. Carlisle Cullen parking sign!  And of course, be sure to take a beautiful hike through the lush, mossy green forest trails of the Hoh Rainforest. La Push, Washington - Although Meyers never mentions in the books which beach Bella and her friends visited, there are three local beaches just 20 minutes drive outside of Forks. First Beach is part of the Quileute Nation, and Second and Third Beach are part of the Olympic National Park.  These beautiful beaches are not the exact ones used in filming, as that was actually in Oregon, but they’re just as described in the books and look very similar to the movie sets.  If you only have time for one, Second Beach is recommended by fans as the closest match to the movie’s location for the infamous “La Push” beach in the movie. Port Angeles, Washington - This is the town where Bella and her best friends try on Prom Dresses, Bella shops for books on local vampire and Quileute lore, and where Bella and Edward have their memorable first date!  While the dress shop and bookstore are fictitious locations, there’s plenty to see and do here from galleries to small shops and museums.  Plus, you can grab a bite at Bella Italia and snag Bella’s Mushroom Ravioli, reenacting your favorite romantic scene!  Just outside of Port Angelos is Hurricane Ridge, a gorgeous hiking spot with misty mountain evergreens and stunning waterfalls. While you’re in town, we recommend checking out the local bookstore and snagging a copy of “Why We Love (And Hate) Twilight” by Sarah Elizabeth Gallagher to learn more about Twilight lore and support an indie author. (Bella would be really into it!) Washougal, Washington - Get out your hiking gear and hang on tight spider monkey, because we’re heading over for a day hike at the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area and making our way to the Cape Horn Overlook for fantastic views of the river gorge and waterfalls, and reenacting our favorite goofy Edward and Bella scene. (In alphabetical order, not order of preference) Antioch Pizza Shop in Antioch For more than 40 years, this shop has built a reputation as a fan favorite for pizza fanatics around the country.  Choose from one of four pizza styles: Thin crust, the Double Decker, Pan Pizza, or Stuffed.  They’ve also got a super yummy Gluten Free Pizza for those on a speciality diet.  Local favorites here include the BLT Pie and the Bacon Double Cheeseburger, but their shining star is the Buffalo Chicken with its spicy buffalo sauce, deliciously moist chicken, and creamy mozzarella cheese. Bonta Pizzeria and Restaurant in Lincolnshi re This family owned-and-operated restaurant offers bold, authentic Italian flavor in a cozy, casual atmosphere. These neapolitan pizzas pack a punch in their handmade crusts and handcrafted toppings baked off in a wood-burning brick oven.  Only the finest ingredients are used!  Select from traditionally made calzones or pizzas with specialties such as the Spek & Burrata, Buffalo Margherita, and Regina Pizzas or the local favorite Sausage and Mozzarella Calzone.  Dinner options also include a wide array of Italian inspired appetizers like the classic Antipasto and Arancini (vegetarian options available), and a wide selection of pasta entrees. Bricks Wood Fired Pizza in Naperville Casual style dining with an upscale taste!  This is the home of authentic wood fired and brick oven pizza since 2005, making them a relative “newcomer” in regional pizza fare, but no less of an expert at their craft.  You’ll never get bored of the “same old, same old” here!  Choose from unique pizza like the “Betty White Arugula” or the “Sunny Side Up” and the simply delectable “Honey Love” pie.  And of course, be sure to check the rotation of their signature seasonal favorites (currently the “Red, White, Bleu” and the “Hawaiian BBQ”). Crosstown Pub & Grill in Naperville This is a local hub for great pub food and local sports that boats some of the best pizza and wings around.  While they are far from the traditional pizza, the Crosstown Turbo Flats are really out of this world.  Try the Chk Thai Thai for a pizza style flat bread with a little pizazz!  Or combine their legendary wings with a flat bread pizza experience.  Wash ‘em down with an ice cold brew and enjoy the Bears game while you’re there!  It’s top notch, one-of-a-kind eatin’. Lou Malnati’s in Grayslake Locals call this pizza some of the best Deep Dish in the region with their famous Buttercrust for the most authentic Chicago option!  Their famous Chicago-style pizzas offer a homemade tomato sauce with extra ooey-gooey cheese for that perfect pull with every slice.  You simply must try the Malnati Chicago Classic topped with delectable sausage and extra cheese.   We’re aces about this one, too, because even our gluten free pals can enjoy a classic deep dish with their small gluten-free from scratch pizzas. Louie’s Pizza in Waukegan This local haunt has been getting top marks since 1941, and that sense of comfort and nostalgia keeps people coming back year after year!  Customers love their classic cheese pizza, but that’s not all they love.  Reviewers report their taste buds are delighted by the garlic butter bread starter, as well as specials on the menu like the “Poor Mans Lobster” (cod with hot melted butter), Greek Salad, Classic Spaghetti and Meatballs, and their drink specials.  It’s some of the best pizza around in the county. Pizzeria DeVille in Libertyville This modern pizza joint offers authentic wood fired pizzas and Italian fare along with a wicked Sunday brunch!  We highly recommend trying out their signature salads while you’re there, like the classic Caprese Salad, the Maa Salad, or the unique Meatball Salad!  Local favorite pizza options include the classic Margherita, Chicken & Waffle pizza, Hot Honey Square, Cup & CHar rPepperoni and Hot Honey Stuffed Motorcity, the vegan friendly Veganator Deluxe, and even a Gluten Free Pizza.  You simply must try it! Quonset Pizza in Waukegan You’re getting old-fashioned classic thin crust pizzas, along with local favorites like Chicago-style Italian beef and of course, wings!  Customers here rave about how perfect the pizza crust is, and the delicious amount of toppings you can choose from.  While you can never go wrong with a traditional cheese pizza, locals also recommend asking for the “BLT Pizza” or “The Works”. Slyce in Wauconda Creating pizzas in the old-world style coal-fired tradition, you’ll find pizza with flavors like none other.  Their specialty high-heat cooking is a clean-burning method that leaves you with a charred crust and soft, chewy interior for the ultimate pizza perfection.  The ease of the Build Your Own Pizza menu allows you to fully customize all of your favorite toppings and cheeses, and they do have a gluten free crust option!  In addition to more than 15 in-house signature pizzas, there’s also a full soup and salad menu as well as small plate options and sandwiches.

In addition to lane centering, this system also helps provide more space between vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes. It works by offsetting the vehicles’ driving path with minor steering adjustments while keeping the vehicle within its lane. An Emergency Driving Stop System is a new function of Lane Tracing Assist. It’s designed to monitor the driver’s inputs, such as steering operation, to determine if they’re inattentive or non-responsive, such as during a medical emergency. This feature is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver doesn’t respond to alerts to take control. Toyota recently announced the 2026 Highlander, which continues moving forward with bold style, a well-appointed three row interior, ample room for passengers and cargo, and a choice of gas or hybrid powertrains. For 2026, Highlander makes All Wheel Drive standard on gas models and a simplified grade structure, with feature-packed models available in four gas and three hybrid grades. more For over 25 years, the Toyota Highlander has earned a reputation for delivering passenger-car-like handling and control coupled with the power and versatility of a mid-size SUV. Gas models will be available in XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum grades and hybrid models will be available in XLE, Limited, and Platinum. Assembled in Princeton, Indiana, Toyota Highlander gas models have a manufacturer-estimated 24 MPG combined rating and hybrid models have a manufacturer-estimated 35 MPG combined rating. Highlander’s interior brings style, utility, and comfort to drivers and passengers alike. It’s available with Sof Tex® or leather trimmed seating, depending on grade. It seats seven when equipped with second row captain’s chairs, and the gas or hybrid XLE, and Limited gas grades have an optional second row bench for seating up to eight. It has up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the second and third row folded down. The 2026 Highlander lineup is expected to start arriving at U.S. Toyota dealerships this coming November. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Pricing (MSRP) will start at $45,270 for the gas XLE grade and $47,020 for hybrid XLE grade, excluding Dealer Processing and Handling fee. Remarkably Hybrid The 2026 Highlander Hybrid will be available in XLE, Limited, and Platinum grades. All hybrid models will be equipped with Toyota’s Electronic On-Demand AWD system and have up to 3,500 pounds of towing capacity. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid combines a high-efficiency 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine with two electric motor-generators. The gas engine employs Variable Valve Timing-intelligent system by Electric motor (VVT-iE) on the intake camshaft, and VVT-i on the exhaust camshaft. A variable cooling system (electric water pump, electric thermostat) and a fully variable oil pump help to further enhance engine efficiency. The gas engine and Motor Generator 2 (MG2) work in concert to deliver dynamic performance, while both MG1 and MG2 charge the hybrid battery. The bottom line is a jaw dropper for the efficient-minded: 243 net combined horsepower, a manufacturer-estimated 35 combined MPG rating, and a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds for all hybrid grades. The Highlander Hybrid’s battery pack was developed with convenience in mind and is installed under the second-row seats, so it does not take away any cargo or passenger space. Like all Toyota hybrid vehicles, the Highlander Hybrid simply goes about its business. For example, the system optimizes the level of electric motor assistance and gas engine speed without the engine running at high revs. Engine speed is synchronized with vehicle speed, yielding effortless and quiet acceleration. The unique AWD system for Highlander Hybrid employs a separate rear-mounted electric motor to power the rear wheels when needed. Like the hybrid powertrain itself, the AWD system is designed to work seamlessly, switching on and off and sending power to the wheels as needed. Highlander Hybrid offers selectable Normal, Eco, and Sport driving modes that let the driver choose the vehicle’s performance personality. ECO mode extracts maximum efficiency from the fuel and battery, while NORMAL mode is ideal for everyday driving. SPORT mode quickens the throttle response from the hybrid system for improved acceleration control. There is also an EV mode button, which allows electric-only driving at low speeds for short distances. Regenerative braking captures the energy of the turning wheels as the vehicle slows, sending it to the hybrid battery. To foster greater control when driving in hilly areas, the driver can manually control regenerative braking in steps, like the engine braking effect of downshifting a manual transmission. Highlander Hybrid Limited and Platinum models also come with Predictive Efficient Drive (PED), standard. PED analyzes the driver’s daily driving habits and upcoming road and traffic conditions to help optimize battery usage and charging. The more the vehicle is driven, the more data is accumulated, thereby helping to support fuel efficient driving patterns. Travel in Style in the XLE Hybrid The Highlander Hybrid line starts with the XLE grade. It includes standard features like SofTex-trimmed front and second-row seats with an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, 7-inch color LCD Multi-Information Display (MID), in-zone automatic climate control with air filter, 8.0-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, five USB ports, a Smart Key System and more. The Highlander Hybrid XLE is equipped with Electronic On-Demand AWD. Other standard equipment includes a hands-free power liftgate, Qi wireless smartphone charger, auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink® universal garage door opener, and second row sunshades. For extra storage, roof rails come standard. Options include an upgrade to a 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen and second-row bench seat. Take it Upscale with Limited and Platinum Hybrid The Highlander Hybrid Limited and Platinum grades have even more features. Both models have standard Electronic On-Demand AWD. They come with leather-trimmed first- and second-row seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and 10-way power-adjustability and memory function for the driver’s seat that includes power lumbar support and 8-way power-adjustability for the front passenger seat. Both grades also come standard with a 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen and 11-speaker JBL® Premium Audio system that includes a subwoofer and amplifier. Additional standard exterior touches for the Limited and Platinum Hybrid grades include 20-inch wheels, power-folding heated outside mirror with turn signal and blind spot warning indicators, puddle lights with integrated Highlander logo, and black painted grille with chrome-plated surround. The Hybrid Platinum grade adds heated second-row captain’s chairs for even more rear passenger comfort, and a Panoramic Glass Moonroof with sunshade and one-touch front power tilt/slide function. It’s housekeeping week, so we thought we’d do a little tidying and minding of our vehicles!  From important paperwork to cleaning and maintenance tips, on today’s blog we’re handing you a primer for easy vehicle housekeeping.  We’ll start with making sure essential documents are up to date and in the right place, followed by a list of vital emergency items you should have on hand at all times, and some general cleanliness for maintenance between professional detailings. more First Up: Paperwork! It’s important to check that your insurance, registration, and license are up to date and stored in a secure place. The center console or glove compartment are common places to store these, but some drivers like to purchase a little clip and holder for registration/insurance that attaches them above the driver’s side visor for convenience. Let’s review important documents you should be able to locate in a pinch: Vehicle Registration and/or official dated receipt of payment for updated registration if renewed recently. Proof of Insurance with updated policy coverage dates (you can also download this to your mobile phone wallet and/or utilize a digital app version in most states) Your Driver’s License should be up to date and in your possession at all times. Maintenance Records of recent repairs and regular oil changes are a bonus The vehicle owner’s manual should be accessible in a pinch to identify warning lights and access important make/model information for maintenance and safety Emergency contact names/numbers list on a paper in the glove compartment is also a good idea Ensure that the title of your vehicle is safe and secure in your home in a fireproof box. Important: Never store your vehicle title inside of the car itself. This is the official proof of ownership for your vehicle, and should it get damaged or stolen this may cause significant issues for recovery or insurance purposes. Likewise if you have a “bill of sale” for your vehicle, it should be stowed with the title and never inside the vehicle itself. Second: Basic Emergency Kit Supplies We’ve run several blogs devoted to preparing for emergencies and what to keep on hand for essential travel with on road trips, but here’s a quick primer to refresh you! Basic emergency and maintenance tools you should keep in your vehicle include: A tire pressure gauge to maintain proper pressure Jumper cables in case of emergency A spare tire with tire jack A tire air compressor A tire patch kit and air pump A few blankets and towels In cold weather months: include a small container of kitty litter and/or road salt with a portable shovel in case of emergency, hats, gloves, hand warmers LED flashers or reflective cones/triangles in case of emergency A handcrank or small pocket LED flashlight A portable battery charger for your vehicle and electronics It’s also a great idea to have an extra set of clothes on hand to change into if you get stranded in inclement weather or have an emergency. Third: Basic Cleaning and Maintenance Items A good rule of thumb is to clean and disinfect your car monthly, but at least every quarter should be the bare minimum. In colder months, more frequent cleanings may be advisable, as you can never be too cautious during “cold and flu” season and school germs out to play!  Thankfully, we’ve got a great shortlist of supplies we recommend to clean and tidy your car, as well as make at-home detailing a breeze. To keep your car clean regularly you should keep these great items on hand Car upholstery and leather-friendly vehicle disinfectant wipes and spray An upholstery friendly pet deodorizer/neutralizing spray A hydrophobic windshield/glass treatment to aid in proper visibility. Coolant/antifreeze to prevent your vehicle from overheating. Proper motor oil for your make/model of vehicle so you can always top it off before long drives and maintain proper fluid levels. Glass Cleaner for streak-free, obstruction free windshields Specialized Car Shampoo and Rinse that’s formulated to remove debris and grime without harming your paint or wrap. Carpet Cleaner powder or spray to maintain vehicle upholstery and cut down on environmental allergens and debris, and use a soft bristle brush. Interior Car Cleaning Wipes specifically formulated to protect your vehicle’s interior fabric (leather, PVC, fabric, etc) Clean microfiber cloths instead of sponges as they pick up dirt and debris without scratching or creating dreaded paint swirls. A clay bar to help remove dirt and contaminants from your vehicle after washing with cleansers and shampoos. A decent portable vacuum cleaner that can adequately remove dust, dirt, and debris while trapping allergens that can reach into small nooks, crannies, and side pockets. Fourth: Simple Car Cleaning Tips Here’s some basic detailing and cleaning tips for an at-home car wash and detail: Cleaning your vehicle out of direct sunlight and in a shady area to allow the cleansers to work efficiently without evaporation. Don’t use sponges in a swirling, circular motion; choose one direction to wipe and stick with it! Utilize more than one bucket: one for an initial rinse down, one for clean soapy water, one with clean water for rinsing the dirty sponge/microfiber cloth; this eliminates chances of dragging grit and grime back onto the car after it’s been cleaned. Clean your car starting with a washdown of the tires, followed by top to the bottom of the vehicle for maximum efficiency. If you spot bugs or bird droppings on your vehicle, make sure to remove them by using a special removal cleaner or some sort of lubricant to avoid scratching the paint. Remove sap, dead bugs, and animal droppings as quickly as you can when you spot them. Letting them sit can cause corrosion, scratches, and stains.

Today is national wildlife day, and we’ll be highlighting some beautiful wildlife refuge areas, preserves, and ecosystems that you can visit. Big River State Forest in Illinois Covering 3,000+ acres of forest land, this features the remnants of a vast prairie and woodland border that once covered much of the state.  You’ll find two endangered plants here: penstemon aka Bearded Tongue, and Patterson’s bindweed.  Other plants include Indian Grass, June Grass, Prairie Bush Clover, Purple Prairie Clover, and Blazing Star just to name a few.  Thanks to the Mississippi River, there is abundant wildlife including white-tailed deer, a variety of squirrels, rabbits, quail, bobcats, coyote, mink, muskrat, beaver, several varieties of waterfowl, river otters, frogs, turtles, and numerous fish. Cache River State Natural Area in Illinois This area covers more than 18,000 acres across 3 counties and has three different management units: Little Black Slough, Lower Cache River Swamps, and Glass Hill.  Each of these distinct areas provides food, water, and shelter for a magnitude of diverse wildlife and plant species, with more than 100 endangered species included.  Visitors can expect to spot abundant wildlife including migratory waterfowl, birds of prey including osprey and golden eagles, white-tailed deer, squirrels, gray and red foxes, opossums, skunks, minks, Indiana Bats, River Otters, tree frogs, southern leopard frogs bullfrogs, several varieties of fish including channel cats, bowfin, needlenose gar, pygmy sunfish, and cypress minnows. TreeHouse Wildlife Center in Illinois With 8.5 acres of protected property, this special rehabilitation refuge and Wildlife Center promotes and protects local wildlife.  The aim of the center is to educate the local community through the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of native wildlife and thus promote conservation and ecological restoration.  Through the rescue and center, visitors can learn about the life and habits of local wildlife including birds, reptiles, mammals, and even insects, and learn about the importance of environmental protection. This facility does not receive governmental funding and is directly supported by the local community, and that’s part of what makes it so important!  As community members, we can have the chance to learn about the local wildlife, and do our part in preserving it and protecting it for generations to come.  With more than 40 years of hard work and dedication, this center and its talented staff and volunteers have saved hundreds of animals and helped make our communities richer and more vibrant.  It makes a great trip with your family! Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa Formerly known as Walnut Creek, this park was established in 1990 at the encouragement of Congressman Neal Edward Smith, for whom it is now named. This area is a special federal national wildlife refuge seeking to restore and preserve native tallgrass prairies and oak savanna ecosystems that once covered most of the state.  Both staff and volunteers are working full-time to preserve, protect, and restore the biological diversity of the sedge meadows, prairies, and savannas as well as the local aquatic life while helping visitors engage with the local wildlife and ecosystems.  There are numerous miles of nature trails open to the public for walking, hiking, dog walking, cycling, and photography.  The park is home to a herd of approximately 60 American Bison and 20 elk in a specially designated 800-acre enclosure, numerous deer, rabbits, local and migratory birds, snakes, frogs, and more! Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin Covering an area of almost 44,000 acres, this refuge is open year round for wildlife observation, photography, hiking, fishing and more.  The ecosystems here include Savanna, Prairies, Wetlands, and Forests all intertwining thanks to the new boardwalks and special visitor’s center.  With more than 230 bird species, this is a birder’s paradise!  You’ll also be able to spot dragonflies, butterflies (including the endangered Karner Blue butterfly), wolves, otters, porcupines, turtles, bears, and more!  Special photography programs are available the fourth Saturday of the month so you can live out your “Nat Geo” inspired dreams.

On Sunday September 14th in Downtown Waukegan at Butrick & Washington Street come out and celebrate Viva La Independencia in Waukegan celebrating Latin America and a traditional Independence Parade of Mexico!  A portion of all funds raised during the event will go to supporting the Juntoz Cancer Patient Fund for local Waukegan residents undergoing cancer treatment. Oktoberfest will take place on Friday September 19th and Saturday September 20th at Mickey Finn’s Brewery in Libertyvill e from 5PM to 10PM. On Saturday, families can enjoy Familygarten from 1PM to 4PM with children’s activities, live music, and more. The main weekend event is an admission ticket required one, but includes a plastic stein and one beer ticket. Known as one of the “Seven Wonders of Illinois”, the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway is where the Mississippi, Missouri, and Illinois Rivers all converge.  This 33-mile scenic drive starts its journey in Hartford and ends in Grafton at Pere Marquette State Park. Today, we’re going to take a look at some of the wonderful stops and towns dotted along the map, as well as highlighting the fantastic scenic views you’ll experience as you drive.  It’s a memorable local experience, and we hope you enjoy this wonderful mini road trip right in our own home state. Along your drive you’ll find abundant wildlife, charming rolling hills, quaint countryside towns and villages, and stunning stone bluffs as you make your way through several counties.  This byway is full of scenic and historic stops and we can’t wait to tell you all about it. So, pack up your pals and head on out for a day of memories in your new car from Classic of Waukegan as we hit the road on a picturesque early autumn 2-day road trip! Day One: Visiting Alton, Hartford, and Madison County Our trip starts in Madison County at the intersection of Route 3 along The Old Chain of Rocks Bridge, a pedestrian river walk that once connected Illinois and Missouri over the Mississippi River. You’ll pick up the scenic Byway in nearby Hartford, where we recommend stopping by the Lewis and Clark State Historic Site. Travel onwards to Alton and explore the National Great Rivers Museum, Melvin Price Locks & Dam, and views of the Mississippi River.  Alton is a great stop for the “spooky season” as it’s known as one of the most haunted small towns in America, offering tours of Mysterious Mineral Springs Mall, McPike Mansion, and more. Day Two: Elsah, Down and Grafton The village of Elsah is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it’s easy to see why its historic charm has been preserved. It’s a quaint little town with narrow streets, old-timey shops including The Elsah General Store, and the Village of Elsah Museum. Just outside of Elsah in the woods you’ll find the TreeHouse Wildlife Center, a facility that helps rehabilitate and release wild animals, including American Bald Eagles, foxes, bobcats, and other critters. The riverfront community of Grafton offers beautiful views of the river with riverfront dining options and lodging.  The Grafton SkyTour takes you from Main Street up 300 feet high to the river bluffs in either an open-air chair lift or gondola ride.  The SkyTour ends at Aerie’s Resort and the Aerie Riverview Winery!  While you’re at the resort, stop by Grafton Zipline Adventures to take a tour of the area from the treetops. At the end of your trek you’ll find Pere Marquette State Park, one of the largest state parks in Illinois!  Covering nearly 8,000 acres, it’s a picturesque nature destination along the banks of the Illinois River. It’s perfect for trail running, hiking, horseback riding, archery, fishing, off-road- cycling, and more. There’s even harbor access for boating and fishing off both the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers.

Did you know that Utah has a whopping 5 National Parks? That’s right! Each of these incredible parks is iconic in its own right, but together they’re known as “The Mighty Five”.  At each park, you’ll find unique plants and animals and remote wilderness offering peaceful landscapes that are downright awe inspiring.  Along your journey to exploring each of these magnificent parks, you’ll also find charming small towns and several national monuments.  It’s one of our personal favorite states to visit for exploring our country’s incredible park lands.  So, what are you waiting for? Hop in your new car from Classic of Waukegan and let’s hit the road. more Arches National Park sprawls across 72,234 acres of land featuring magnificent stone and earthen structures including sandstone fins, towers, ribs, balanced rocks, and the infamous arches.  Popular arches include the Double O Arch, Broken Arch, Landscape Arch, Windows Loop, Tower Arch, and Delicate Arch which features a 65-foot arch!  In fact, there are 2,000 sandstone arches which is how the park got its moniker.  March through October are the most popular months to visit the park, but you can beat the crowds if you arrive in the very early morning or late afternoon.  Popular activities include hiking, stargazing, nature and wildlife photography, guided ranger tours, and there’s even a singular campground offering a comfortable stay within the park. While you're in the area, we highly recommend exploring the city of Moab which is just about 5 miles outside of the park’s entrance.  In Moab, you can charter a specialty flight that takes you on a scenic tour over both Arches and Canyonlands for a brand new perspective, or book a rafting trip along the Colorado River.  Moab is also world-renowned for mountain biking and hiking, and keep your eyes peeled for Native American rock art and even some paleontology finds while you’re out there!  The outstanding Moab Giants roadside attraction offers a 5D paleoaquarium, a 3D movie, and a massive T-Rex statue that we promise is fun for all ages, even the kid at heart! And of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t let you know that the Museum of Moab has a great dinosaur exhibit, too Bryce Canyon is rife with red rock hoodoos and dark green alpine forests making the landscape utterly indelible in your memory.  The contrast between the natural sculptural structures and those wildlife studded trees is to die for!  This alpine forest environment is home to dozens of species of birds and mammals, so keep your eyes wide open as you take the park’s 18-mile scenic drive so you don’t miss a thing.  The hiking and biking trails are plentiful, and no matter if you’re a newbie to the pastime or you’re an expert who loves a multi-day backpacking jaunt, you’ll have a great time.  Looking for a unique view of the park? Check out the equestrian trails and book a guided horseback ride through the park.  While it’s a wonderful place to visit when the sun is up, it’s night time that the park really shines, literally!  As an accredited International Dark Sky Park, this is the unique destination for world-class stargazing thanks to its lack of noise pollution. Canyonlands National Park offers an immense amount of variety when it comes to exploration.  Visit the more remote areas of the park for a more secluded, peaceful stay, or mark your itinerary with the most popular hikes and landforms so you don’t miss a thing!  This park deserves its time to shine, so plan to spend a little extra time here on your visit to the big 5.  There are two visitor centers and a ranger station to help you navigate through the park and pick up your travel permits.  This park has a unique geological history thanks to hundreds of years of erosion.  You’ll find the bedrock has been carved into steep cliffs, impressive pinnacles, flying buttresses, canyons, and domes.  You’ll also note the stunning horizontal strata of sedimentary rocks with clearly visible layers featuring Navajo Sandstone, Kayenta Formation, Wingate Sandstone, White Rim Sandstone, and more.  It’s very important to adhere to posted trail signs here so you don’t “bust the crust” – a single misstep outside the designated trails can cause immeasurable damage to the environment.  You’ll notice rock cairns or rock piles to help denote the trail markers, but please do not disturb or dismantle them or add any new ones to prevent fellow hikers from getting lost or injured.  The park is also known for its extreme heat where temperatures can spike higher than 100º during the peak of summer, so it’s best to opt for long hikes for early mornings and evenings to stay cooler. Capitol Reef is one of the least crowded destinations on our list today, but it is no less wondrous to behold. You’ll find its seclusion quite welcoming, and there are numerous campsites to choose from for a relaxing respite away from your usual travel spots.  The scenic views in this park are unparalleled, offering seemingly endless skylines and glorious red rock landscape far beyond what the eye can see.  It almost feels like a space exploration to a martian planet, just magnificent sweeping vistas and miles and miles of hiking trails through the slot canyons.  Canyoneering is also very popular, but it’s important to note that while some can be traveled by foot, others may require special equipment and be very narrow to navigate.  The Temples of the Sun and Moon are a pair of dramatic rock formations jutting out from the flat landscape with great gusto as if you were in a real life Star Wars environment!  Want to get a better view of the park? Pack up your pals in your comfy new car and explore the Cathedral Valley Scenic Byway or Notom Road Scenic Byway for some gorgeous scenic overlooks and viewpoints. Zion National Park may be last on our list alphabetically, but was actually Utah’s first national park! It features a one thousand foot deep red rock canyon surrounded by pinyon-juniper woodlands, ponderosa pine forests, grasslands, and desert landscapes.  It has historically been the home of Ancestral Pueblo, Fremont, and Southern Paiute peoples for centuries.  The best time to visit is the autumn, as the temperatures are the coolest and the weather most even.  Zion is well-known for its sweeping vistas, crystal clear pools of water, natural arches, and narrow canyons.  Rock climbing and canyoneering are popular pastimes here and we strongly recommend that if you enjoy this type of activity, hire an experienced local guide for safety's sake.  Zion Canyon is also a top notch spot to do some stargazing as another International Dark Sky Park on our list, especially perfect if you book a campground to spend the night! We’ve focused quite a bit on our nation's gorgeous National Parks this summer, and today we’re paying homage to some of our favorites in the midwest.  If you were looking for a primer to Midwest National Parks, this is the perfect blog for you!We’ll start this post off with a crash course history lesson on the National Parks Service and its founding, followed by our recommendations on great parks. more During the Act of March 1st, 1872, Congress established the grounds of Yellowstone Park in the territories of Montana and Wyoming, which kickstarted the whole National Parks Movement.  Later, in August 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the act which created the National Park Service, a federal bureau in the Department of the Interior responsible for protecting the 35 national parks and monuments then managed by the department, as well as future ones not yet designated.  The Executive Order in 1933 helped transfer 56 national monuments and military sites to the National Park Service.  Today, the National Park system is made up of more than 400 designated areas, including the 50 US States and Territories. How many national parks have you been to? Here’s a starting point to mark off a few Midwest destinations on your National Parks map: Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Bayfield, WI encompasses 21 islands and 12 miles of mainland coastal protected areas.  In addition to the incredible bluffs on the shores of Lake Superior, it’s also home to the largest collection of historic lighthouses in the nation! Badlands National Park in South Dakota sprawls across 244,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie, steep canyons, and rock formations like buttes, pinnacles, and spires.  It’s a stunning mix of sculptural peaks and forms made of colorful sediment and fossil beds. Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in Rhinelander WI spans a jaw dropping 1.5 million acres of unspoiled wilderness across Wisconsin’s Northwoods.  You’ll find no shortage of outdoorsy activities such as canoeing, hiking, cycling, paddling, cross-country skiing, camping, fishing, and more. Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio sits between Cleveland and Akrok and features a restored section of the historic Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath, as well as being a throughway for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.  It features several waterfalls and abundant wildlife. Indiana Dunes National Park in Porter IN has 15 miles of gorgeous shoreline along the southern banks of Lake Michigan. The park is home to some of the highest dunes towering over the lake at nearly 200 feet high with impressive views and landscapes of the area!  It’s also an incredible destination for birdwatching, wildlife enthusiasts, and nature photography! Lewis & Clark Historic Trail (Spans 16 states including IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MO, MT, NE, ND, OH, OR, PA, SD, WA, WV) winds through almost 4,900 miles of the homelands from over 60 Tribal nations. It follows the inbound and outbound routes of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806 from Pittsburg through to the Pacific Ocean Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail (In IL, IA, NE, UT, WY) follows the 1,300 mile path of the Mormons who fled Nauvoo and settled down in the Great Salt Lake Valley from 1846-1847. Pullman National Historic Park in Chicago, IL i s located on the far south side of Chicago.  The visitor center offers tours at 11AM and 2PM daily. Shawnee National Forest in Herod IL encompasses 289,000 stunning acres of parkland located in Southern Illinois and nestled between both the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.  Visitors will find breathtaking scenic views from the top of great canyons and sandstone cliffs, and stunning crystal clear waters and rocky streams. The many lakes, ponds, waterfalls, rivers, and streams of the area are perfect for fishing and swimming, and the sprawling prairies and woodland trails are perfect for hiking, cycling, trail running and more. Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota in the western portion of the state at the point where the Great Plains meet Badlands.  The park is known for its Painted Canyon, and the former home of President Roosevelt, Maltese Cross Cabin.  We highly recommend taking a drive along The Scenic Loop Drive which makes its way through several sections of the park with scenic overlooks. Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge in Thomson IL is the longest, contiguous river refuge in the continental US at 261 miles in length!  The refuge includes protected wetlands, islands, marshes, and floodplain forests, many of which are accessible only by boat. Some portions of the refuge are open to seasonal hunting, trapping, and fishing but they do have very restrictive regulations.

Whether you want to learn more about the earth sciences through fossil exploration or historic artifacts, or you want to try your hand at a science experiment, or maybe you’d like to wonder what it’s like to wander amongst the stars, you’ll find a little something to satisfy every curious mind.  Check out our picks for four incredible science museums in the midwest and plan your next family fun outing. more Michigan Science Center in Detroit is part of the Smithsonian network of museums and one of the 10 largest science museums in the US.  It features 5 different theaters: The Chrysler IMAX Dome Theater, Dassault Systemes Planetarium, Toyota Engineering Theater, Chrysler Science State, and DTE Energy Sparks Theater, each hosting their own unique exhibit and themes highlighting life sciences, physical sciences, geology, and more.  The museum hosts 220 interactive exhibits across the sciences including live shows and an observatory.  The ExploreLAB offers a chance to check out fossils, dinosaurs, insects, and more.  The Special Exhibit Hall features a rotating series of special exhibits for limited engagements.  It’s a great opportunity to give your kids a hands-on, interactive STEM centered experience. Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines is an immersive experience in the world of science, featuring interactive galleries and learning labs along with a planetarium and IMAX theater.  The Star Theater is a 50-foot planetarium featuring a rotation of about 10-12 exhibits on space and weather related topics.  Permanent Exhibits include the Small Discoveries exhibit for toddlers and kids to explore a realistic tiny town; “What on Earth?” focus on zoology, meteorology, and geology; “When Things Get Moving” is a physical sciences experience platform with hands-on mechanics and engineering; “Why the Sky?” focuses in space exploration and astronomy an lets you get up close with spacecraft; “Makers Studio” is a STEAM based learning exhibit allowing you and your family to create, design, and test one-of-a-kind creations; “Brick by Brick” is a LEGO centric exhibit showcasing architecture and engineering through play.  These and many more rotating limited engagements and special events are a must-see if you’re in the area The Science Center of Southern Illinois in Carbondale offers visitors numerous hands-on activities and interactive exhibits with STEM/STEAM focused activities.  This museum is geared especially towards children. Explore the 65+ exhibits geared from infants through teens including dioramas, hands-on exhibits, sculptures, and more.  You’ll find a play area for small kids that’s focused on learning through play. Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is a non-profit science museum adjacent to both Lake Michigan and University of Chicago.  The facility is known for its award-winning exhibits, numerous historic artifacts, and dozens of hands-on activities.  Current Exhibits include “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing” which immerses visitors in comic books, props, and costumes; “Coal Mine” takes guests through a mineshaft for an inside look into a true-to-life coal mine; “The Blue Paradox” takes a look at our relationship with the environment and pollution; “U-505” is a real life German Submarine used during World War II on display; “Beyond the Surface” explores the artistry and history of X-Rays and photography; “Science Storms” explores concepts of weather and meteorology; “Pioneer Zephyr” is a historic train that pioneered modern rail travel and transportation; “Henry Crown Space Center” features artifacts and spacecraft, chronicling the history of space programs around the world.
